If you’ve never worked as a self-employed carer before, or are new to introductory agencies such as IntroEase, you’re likely to have some questions, we’ve answered some common ones here
In the simplest terms, self-employment means working for yourself, rather than an employer. It can give you greater control over things like when and where you work, as well as who you care for.
When you sign up with HMRC, they may ask if you’d like to be classed as a sole trader, or a limited company – which can be confusing
Sole Trader
A sole trader is simply a person who is self-employed, and who’s the sole owner of their business. As a self-employed carer – you are your business, and therefore becoming a sole trader is likely to be the most appropriate option for you. There’s far less paperwork too, as sole traders usually only need to submit an annual tax return.
Limited Company
Becoming a limited company gives your business its own separate identity, and while this can have its advantages, it also means more responsibility for you, and potentially more paperwork. A limited company classification is often something to consider further down the line, once you’re comfortable with self-employment, or have reached a certain level of earnings.
If you’re unsure what to register as, it’s best to give HMRC a call for some personalised advice.
The deadline for completing your tax return and paying what you owe is the 31st January, and is the same each year.
However, tax is calculated from April to April, rather than January to December. This means that you can complete your tax return any time after April each year – getting it out the way and giving yourself more time to pay.
Your self-assessment tax return can be completed online through the Government website. The online form is split into various sections, and each question has an inbuilt prompt offering helpful information if you get stuck, or if you’re unsure how to answer.

From required experience and insurance to placement opportunities and travel costs, this FAQ section covers everything you need to know before getting started.
Live-in care is a popular alternative to residential homes, allowing older people to stay independent in the comfort of their own home. It provides personalised support, companionship, and peace of mind, while reducing the risks of isolation and loneliness.
We ask that the self-employed carers have 6+ months of professional live in care experience in adult or elderly care and must be happy to provide references.
We as for at least 7 days’ notice in order to leave a placement, however, we understand that emergencies may happen were you need to leave short notice. Please note you cannot leave a placement until alternative cover has arrived.
This will depend on the start date of the placement, some may be short notice and starting the same day, other within a few days or the next week.
There’s no fixed rule for live-in care — it depends on the client’s needs and personal arrangements. With IntroEase, you and the client can agree on the hours that work best.
As a guide, many families expect carers to provide support for around 7–10 hours a day, with regular breaks (often up to 2 hours a day, when safe to do so). Carers are present in the home 24/7, but they also need sufficient rest. If night-time support is needed frequently, client and or families may wish to arrange additional overnight help.
Once the placement concludes, we will gather feedback from both the client and you. If the feedback is positive and there is a need to cover the placement again, we will inquire about your availability.
Yes, we will never force anyone to undertake a placement they are not comfortable with.
Yes – all the carers need to be registered as self-employed. IntroEase operates solely as an introductory agency. Carers must be self-employed; no employment is offered. This means that you are responsible for your own taxes and National Insurance contributions.
We recommend all the self-employed carers obtain relevant insurance – having the right insurance in place can help protect you legally and financially from potential risks.
